Al Sadd secured a meeting with Monterrey, beating Qatar 3: 1 against Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup 2019 after beating Hienghene Sport.
Abdelkarim Hassan’s powerful indirect free-kick put them on the road to extra time and Pedro Miguel scored an insurance goal late. Baghdad Bounedjah and Amy Roine scored in both halves to see the 90-minute finish at eye level.
The debutants started impressively, unwavering from their first steps on the global stage. Jefferson Dahite pounded on the side net before Roine’s spectacular overhead attempt made her intention clear.
After the predatory end of Bounedjah, however, he stole between the central defender of Hienghene and shot home the first goal of the tournament. Akram Afif thought he had made it two, but his strike was ruled out for offside.
The game was reversed within a minute of the reboot, as Roine trained to make a great home move. Originally ruled out for a foul, a VAR review provided cheering scenes for the Pacific Islanders.
Al Sadd retook the lead late in the first leg, forcing a mistake by goalkeeper Rocky Nyikeine, who forced a teammate’s back pass. Hassan seized the opportunity and shot past a wall of defenders at close range.
Pedro Miguel struck off an attack six minutes before the final whistle and made sure the home side would progress.
