The Bangladeshi T20I captain, Mahmudullah, is trying to be more consistent with his team after outperforming Zimbabwe in all formats at home.
After a convincing victory in the one-off test, Bangladesh stormed past Zimbabwe in each of the three ODIs and two T20Is. The victories are a huge boost to the team, which has been beaten extensively in the T20I series and in the first of two tests against Pakistan last month.
Mahmudullah saw the triumph as a turning point for his side and was keen to maintain the right attitude and way of thinking for the future.
“It was equally important for us to play good cricket and dominate against the opponent because we haven’t been doing well lately,” said Mahmudullah after winning his team with nine wickets in the second T20I on Wednesday, March 11th. “This series was a turning point for us. We were favorites in every series – whether Test, ODI or T20I. It often happens that you lose focus after you win the first game. You had to play with that kind of focus so very important.
“I think the attitude [going forward is important]. The attitude comes first and then the performance. I think the mindset and hunger that everyone showed was very important.”
Liton Das, the opener, was the star in Bangladesh in his glorious run and topped the run-scoring charts in both ODIs and T20Is. Experienced activists Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, and Mustafizur Rahman also showed signs of great shape. Mahmudullah reiterated that his team always had the potential to outperform and believed that recent achievements could be a motivating factor when facing up to challenging opponents in the future.
“When we went to Pakistan, we had a discussion about why we play like that,” said the 34-year-old. “Everyone thinks we are a better team and can do better. There was no doubt about that. However, we lacked something. That is why we focused more on this series with these things from the start. These are the positive aspects for us and in the future, we have to keep in mind that we can play such teams with dominance.
Maybe we got the result we were looking for today, but maybe we won’t get it in the next series. But we have to believe that we can do that. If we move away from here, it will be difficult for us to build something up. Our next goal is to achieve constant performance against the big teams or the so-called big teams. “
