What Happened on First Day?

On the first day in Southampton, only 17.4 overs were possible. An early wicket for Shannon Gabriel was countered by a close partnership between Rory Burns and Joe Denly.

Both sides watched a minute’s silence before the game to recall Everton Weekes who died last week and anyone who lost their lives through COVID-19. The players and referees also took one knee as a sign of support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Only three overs were possible before the rain forced the players back from the field. England decided to hit after a late start. Despite the minimal game, there was a lot of excitement. Kemar Roach almost caught Rory Burns in the first round. The left-handed opener angled a ball from the wicket into it and was hit on the pad. Shannon Gabriel defeated Dom Sibley’s outside edge before bowling him when the English kick-off left a straight ball behind.

Further rain caused a second delay in the process before the game resumed, but after only seven more balls the rain started to fall again.

The first frontier in international cricket for almost four months came from Burns’ bat when shortly after the players had entered the field for the third time in the day, he cut off an inflated delivery from Gabriel through the middle of the wicket. Denly hit his first limit with a flashing shot in Gabriel’s next round.

The batsmen were more afraid, especially when Denly tried to drive a wide ball from Gabriel, and only managed to push the ball through a gap in the cord.

Denly and Burns continued to scrapping when Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder took over the opening bowlers, but the bowlers in the West Indies failed to generate real opportunities despite several misses.

Heavy clouds swept over us and poor light forced the players back into the locker room, which turned out to be the last time of the day.
