Tamim Iqbal, the recently appointed Bangladeshi ODI captain, wants to strengthen the confidence of younger players to take Bangladesh Cricket Upwards.
Bangladesh has had some memorable years in the recent past and 2015 was a particularly important season for them as they defeated teams like Pakistan, South Africa, and India in the ODI series at home. While Bangladesh has remained competitive in format since then, consistency has been an issue.
At the 2019 ICC World Cricket Championship for Men, they finished third in the points table with five losses and three wins from eight games. Since then, they have lost three ODIs and won three, with victories against a Zimbabwean team ranked 12th on the MRF Tires ICC men’s ODI ranking. Tamim, who took the lead from Mashrafe Mortaza after the Zimbabwe series, admitted that the team’s performance chart showed a “downward trend”, but he wants to fix this.
“Especially at ODIs, 2015 was the turning point in cricket in Bangladesh,” said Tamim in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo. “Our graphics showed a slight downward trend, but I want to show it up. There will always be a bit of up and downs, but we have to return to stability as a team.
“We have to stay on the right track with ODIs. We don’t play much because there are so many T20Is these days. We need to know what we want to achieve as a team. We have a different team than.” There are a lot of young players. I am sure if we can tick all the boxes there is no reason why we cannot repeat 2015. “
While the more experienced players like Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim remain an integral part of the ODI set up in Bangladesh, the captain wants the youngsters to be strengthened. He believes that they are only a “big” win away from building their confidence, which could prepare them for further success.

“We have four or five young players like (Mohammad) Naim, Afif (Hossain) and (Aminul Islam) Biplob. Even someone like Taijul [Islam] is young in ODI cricket, even though he was in the national lineup for six years.
“A big win will give this group a lot of courage. If you start winning games, build confidence. When we defeated Pakistan 3-0 in 2015, we believed a lot more in ourselves. We were able to defend a score of 250 or more. ” After beating Pakistan, we thought we could beat India and then South Africa. If we can win against large teams in a similar way, the boys will find confidence. “
He also wants other players under him to learn to build an insatiable appetite for success by naming other, more established players as templates to follow.
“Someone like Liton now reacts and behaves differently after getting out at 70 or 80. He wants to do well after the record of 170. I see a lot of hunger in him. I hope that everyone goes the same way.
“Mushfiqur Rahim is another great example. He’s not satisfied in any format. He tries hard when he’s not doing well. But when he’s doing well, he wants to keep improving. If everyone thinks that way, life will be easier for the captain, coach, and older players. “
In March 2020 Bangladesh vs Ireland series was scheduled but due to Coronavirus it already has been postponed now this series will go on 22 May 2020.
