The nine players who were not included in the squad remain in the group and continue training before the T20I series, which follows the tests. These nine players are Fakhar Zahman, Haider Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hasnain and Musa Khan.

Pakistan played warm-up games within the squad, with Sohail Khan in particular using the games to advance his case for selection in the first test on August 5. He won 5/50, including the gates of Abid Ali and Sarfaraz Ahmed, in the first game before winning 5/37 in a second low-score game when he removed the top three from Shan Masood, Abid Ali and Captain Azhar Ali for individual figures.
