Veterans Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard will return to the West Indies squad for the first two Twenty20 Internationals against India, while wicket keeper Anthony Bramble will receive a first appearance.
All-rounder Andre Russell, whose World Cup was interrupted by a knee injury, was inducted into the 14-man squad on Monday, July 22nd.
Narine was last playing maroon 2017 in the West Indies region. Although he was told by the new jury that he was fighting for a place in the squad of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 for men, a finger injury precluded him before the squad was filled. In the years he missed the national selection, the Mystery Spinner was a regular in T20 leagues around the world.
Pollard appeared on the India tour in 2018, performing for the first time in a year. He has not made the cut for the World Cup, but remains firmly anchored in the T20 plans of the Caribbean team.
Chris Gayle has withdrawn from the series while playing a T20 league in Canada, and John Campbell, also a leftist, has left the door open to take his place in the squad led by Carlos Brathwaite.
Khary Pierre, the left-wing spinner who appeared against the visiting Indians in the “A” series, has the chance to expand his three T20Is while 28-year-old Bramble was rewarded for his domestic achievements. He also led West Indies B to the final of the Global T20 tournament in Canada.
“Although Nicholas Pooran will be the first-choice goalkeeper, we have had someone to represent him in case something unexpected happens, and Bramble is the perfect choice,” said Robert Haynes, CWI interim chair of the CWI selection committee. He’s young and ambitious, and we’ve seen his character stand out in the way he fought Guyana Jaguars in the West Indies championship and the Super50 Cup. So we know that he is capable of doing his job. “
Haynes described the squad as “an excellent balance between experience and youth,” which was selected in the wake of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next year, with the West Indies trying to defend their title.
The first two T20Is of the India series will take place on August 3rd and 4th in Lauderhill, Florida. The final will take place on 6th August in Guyana.
