Tamim Iqbal Will Lead Bangladesh Against Sri Lanka In Up Coming ODI Series 2019

Bangladesh striker Tamim Iqbal, who will lead his team against Mashrafe Mortaza’s absence in the upcoming three-day international series against Sri Lanka, believes the hosts will be a tough challenge in domestic conditions.

After a decent show at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, Bangladesh will be reasonably confident of his chances in the upcoming ODI series in Sri Lanka. The experience with Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib al Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin and Liton Das, who fail due to an injury or for personal reasons, however, seems a bit too short.

Tamim, who will lead Bangladesh for the first time in ODIs, believes the series will be an opportunity for the younger players to prove themselves.

“I think the series is very important and whoever travels with the team has a lot to prove because many experienced cricketers are absent because of injuries and other personal reasons,” Tamim said. “This series will be challenging, Sri Lanka is a very strong team at home, but we have done well in the past so there is no reason why we can not make it this time.”

“Those in the squad … if they use this opportunity with both hands, it’s better for both the team and for them,” he added.

Tamim, one of Bangladesh’s most consistent batsmen since 2015, had a below-average World Cup finishing the tournament with 235 runs from eight innings. His recent performances against Sri Lanka were also not very good as he had scored four-digit points in his last five innings against Sri Lanka. The left-hander hopes he can change things in the upcoming series and said the captain’s additional responsibility will not affect his performance.

“I did not think the leadership of the team would be an extra pressure, I could not live up to my expectations [at the World Cup], but there is a new challenge ahead of me and I hope something good will happen.

“If you think about your failure all the time, you’re probably going to fail again, so I’m thinking about what’s ahead of us, rather than what’s gone by, I’m trying to figure out the positives now, and I say that Series is very important and we hope we can do well as a team, “he concluded.
