Japan defeated Uruguay 3-2 to reach the first semi-final of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup since 2005.
Japan was 2-0 up in the first half, thanks to Takaaki Obas Toren, who dropped to the bottom of the net after an effective hold-up game by Shusei Yamauchi and Masanori Okuyama.
Teruki Tabata increased his lead in Japan as he finished a well-functioning team move and started from close range. Uruguay captain Gaston Laduche turned his side back into two goals with a close-range strike. Marcelo Capuso hit late, but that was not enough in the end, and Japan prevailed until the first semi-final in 14 years.
