A win in the first test in Centurion promised a lot, but South Africa subsequently succumbed to England’s all-round brilliance and is now facing its second consecutive defeat at home.

England has meanwhile stamped its authority over the hosts. While Ben Stokes continues to play in a league of its own, the young players Dom Sibley and Ollie Pope have experienced a heyday with the bat to set positive signs for the future.
The bowling unit also took on the task despite the absence of experienced James Anderson. Stuart Broad, the leader of the pack, has 12 gates in the series – two less than Rabada. The conditions could mean that Spinner Dom Bess has cleared the way despite his performance in the third test. England will also keep an eye on the fitness of Pacer Mark Wood, who survived his comeback after an injury.

The hosts joined the Top 4 of England in Port Elizabeth before Stokes and Pope completed 203 runs for the fifth wicket, both scoring hundreds. De Kock’s sturdy 63 was not enough as they were forced to continue.
South Africa also suffered in its second inning spin, with Roots part-time off-spin causing problems. The recent bankruptcy of 99 between Keshav Maharaj and Dane Paterson could only delay the inevitable when England emerged victorious through innings and 53 runs and took a 2-1 lead.

Joe Root, captain of England: “It’s a great template for how we want to play our cricket in the future, get big initial earnings and drive the game from there. We had four boys under 25 who made hundreds or took five for five and this is a great place. We have adapted quickly so far. We learned our lesson very quickly from Centurion. It will be very different in Jo’burg, different challenges for Batters and Bowlers. “
