Marta and Sam Kerr will demonstrate their skills over the last 16 years after the two stars have led their teams to decisive victories.
The Brazilian icon extended their record of the FIFA Women’s World Cup goal from the penalty spot to 17 to end Italy’s perfect start, despite Le Azzurre’s victory as the winner of Group C thanks to a superior goal difference.
In the meantime, Kerr scored four goals with Alex Morgan at the top of the scoring charts for France in 2019 and ensured a 4-1 victory over Jamaica, which included the women’s first World Cup goal for Reggae Girlz.
The recent efforts of the Matildas striker had also gained in importance as Australia passed Brazil and was sent to Nice to compete in the knockout phase against Norway.
Italy 0 – 1 Brazil
A second comeback in Valenciennes was not in the hands of Italy, who had the luck to deal – at least technically – with the toughest opponents, as it was already qualified for the next round. Le Azzurre, who was pushed back to a counterattack from the first minute, was still close in the second half and looked dangerous during the break. It says all about the brilliance of the team’s two previous shows that despite their defeat, they still qualify as group winners.
A great effort by Brazil to inflict a first defeat on Italy. Debinha and Andressinha have improved their game in this critical game and have been very good playmakers. Marta scored the crucial point with a historic goal and overtook Miroslav Klose to become top scorer at every World Cup – whether man or woman. This Brazilian squad fought a serious injury series, but showed heart and courage to reach the knockout stages.
Australia 4- 1 Jamaica
Jamaica scored a historic consolation goal in the final game of its debut campaign and showed a brave performance that opened up many opportunities. Again, however, lacked their refinement. The defense was reasonably good, but at times unbalanced so Kerr could run wild.
Nevertheless, Reggae Girlz performed much better than their two previous games. On the way back to Jamaica, the team can hold their heads up.
Another mixed performance from Australia, very much following the pattern of their opening match against Italy. A strong attack in the first half brought two goals, but here too the Matildas lost their momentum and their defensive lines remained open.
Tameka Yallop and Clare Polkinghorne, however, lacked experience and hope that they will have this expertise over the last 16 years.
