With the 3-0 win over the West Indies, the Australian women have secured a top 4 place in the ICC Women’s Championship and thus confirmed their place at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 in New Zealand.
The top four teams at the championship table and hosts New Zealand automatically qualify for the World Cup. The bottom three teams will be represented in the ICC Qualification for Women, in Bangladesh and Ireland and the winners of the Regional Qualifications for Africa, America, Asia, East Asia, Pacific and Europe for the remaining three participants will decide in favor of the main tournament.
Australia, which had won the first edition of the IWC, is sovereign in the second edition. They have lost just one game in 15 games and are in first place with an emphatic 28 points. After defeating India, Pakistan, New Zealand and the West Indies, 2017 saw only one defeat by England in the first round.
England are second with 24 points, but have played three games more. India and South Africa have 16 points in common after every 15 games and can only reach a maximum of 28 points if they win all remaining games. Pakistan, which is 15 years old, can live to a maximum of 27 years.
This secures Australia the top 4 ranking, although it is unlikely that it will win any more games.
West Indies and Sri Lanka occupy the bottom two places. Sri Lanka, who have won just one victory in 15 games, is almost certainly in the qualifier. West Indies, the last time they were automatic qualifiers, have struggled in recent years in one-day cricket with 12 defeats in 18 games without a result could be achieved.
Australia suffered a shock damage in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017, which was blown away by the Indian master class all-rounder Harmanpreet Kaur.
