But New Zealand still has areas to work on. As in each of the last three T20Is, the hosts stuttered on the way to 5-0 in the final stages of the chase in the first ODI, even though they had full control over the procedures. The hosts had a solid start in the chase when the opening men Henry Nicholls and Martin Guptill completed 85 runs together. But when Nicholls was released for 78 on the 29th and the hosts left at the 171/3 stand, India still seemed to be in the driver’s seat. But Ross Taylor and Tom Latham, who captained injured Kane Williamson, made the fourth wicket that New Zealand took command of with 138 runs. The hosts lost a couple of quick goals in the end, but Taylor remained calm to cross the line and remained undefeated with 109 of 84 balls.
